In your copy of the Video Reflection document, write the title, a one-sentence summary of how Adrienne Clarkson describes what it means to be Canadian, and finally write what you think it means to be Canadian.
F. Reasoning and Logic
An important skill for this course will be to understand the parts of a somebody's reasoning and their logic. There are courses taught about logic and reasoning at university. However, for our purposes we are only going to look at the basics of reasoning and logic called syllogism.
A syllogism is a form of reasoning in which a conclusion is drawn. For example, in the video above Adrienne Clarkson gives a conclusion of "Canada is an immigrant nation". She also arrives at the conclusion that "The paradox of being a 'Canadian' citizenship is that no matter who we are, we learn to be more ourselves by belonging to a group of people"
If we look at her first conclusion, there are two premises to her conclusion. First, "people make a nation". In other words, in order to have a nation, you must have a group of people. Her second premise is that "most people in Canada are immigrant". Her second premise, must use the word "most" because she acknowledges that the original inhabitants of Canada were First Nations people, who were here from "time immemorial", so she can't say "all" people in Canada are "immigrants". Therefore, the syllogism for Adrienne Clarkson's statement is as follows:
1. Major Premise: Nations are made up of people.
2. Minor Premise: Most people in Canada are immigrants.
3. Conclusion: Canada is an immigrant nation.
