The major project for this unit will be a presentation on a poster that you have made about a particular culture. You will team up with three other people. You can choose your partners, but Mr. Koops will choose the culture that you will make the poster about.
Goals:
- Students will be able to identify six cultural patterns within a specific culture.
- Students will be able to teach other students about a pre-contact culture and its cultural patterns.
- Students will be able to discuss possible areas of conflict between pre-contact cultures.
Requirements for the Poster:
- It should have a section about political patterns – how did the culture govern themselves “pre-contact” (before 1600's)?
- It should have a section about economic patterns – how did the culture manage its resource for the people?
- It should have a section about kinship patterns – how did the culture organize the family unit?
- It should have a section on religious patterns – how did the culture practice its spiritual beliefs?
- It should have a section on artistic patterns – how did the culture expressive itself creatively?
- It should have a section on educational patterns – how did the culture teach young children to fit into the culture?
- Each section should be visually attractive and have precise information that is short but concise.
Requirements for the Presentation:
- It should have an introduction and it should give a brief summary or history of the culture.
- It should have a conclusion that examines the possible worldview of the culture.
- Each cultural pattern should be elaborated upon in the poster.
- There should be a handout that goes along with the presentation.
- The audience should be able to recall information about your culture and its cultural patterns.
Marks:
- The poster will be evaluated on the quality and clarity of information given for each cultural pattern.
- The poster will be evaluated for its appearance.
- The presentation will be evaluated on style.
- The presentation will be evaluated on the knowledge demonstrated about the culture.
- The presentation will be evaluated on the quality of the handout.
All these items will generate a possible 400 marks for the partners to divide - creating a mark for each individual out of 100.
